We love a jolly green tree at Christmas, but sometimes smaller spaces call for something a little different. Here, we share how to create a scene-stealing alternative Christmas tree with nothing more than a pile of books, a string of fairy lights, and a touch of whimsy…
This DIY project can bring sparkle to any corner of the house, so is suitable for any flat, wide surface: sideboards, console tables, windowsills, or even piano tops. It looks particularly effective in darker areas where the fairy lights can bring some much-needed festive glow, and by opting for battery powered lights, you won’t even need to worry about having a power outlet nearby.
Whether you’re opting for a harmonious palette or a little bit of everything, choose books of varying sizes to allow for a tree-like, tapered effect. Larger coffee table books work great for a base, with novels and notebooks then decreasing in size as you built your stack upwards.
Using micro LED fairy lights, create a triangular outline around the edge of your stack, securing the lights in place with white tack or by tucking the wire under the edges of your books at each corner of the tree. Choose warm white lights for a cosy glow, or bright white bulbs for a contemporary, cool effect.
If your surface allows, dress the area around the book tree with light-up decorations, ceramic Christmas houses, and wrapped gifts in colours that complement your books. Mini artificial trees look great here and will add some softness to your display, whilst flickering LED candles nestled together with baubles and battery powered tea lights complete the look.
No tree is complete without a star! Using invisible fishing wire, suspend a light-up paper star above your book tree for an on-trend, Scandi feel, or choose a wire-framed Osby star for a classic finish. Alternatively, secure the star to the top of the stack or to the wall behind your display using white tack or double-sided tape, tucking the battery box out of sight behind the uppermost book, and choose the timer effect for automatic illumination every evening.
With this super-simple, effortlessly effective Christmas DIY, no corner need be left behind when it comes to putting up the tree this winter.
