Your Guide to Hosting Al Fresco

Written by: Claire Sugden

With the arrival of longer days and (hopefully) warm, balmy evenings, any outdoor space has the potential to be transformed into a sparkling stage for al fresco gatherings. We’ve collected all our favourite tips and tricks for hosting in style this summer season.

1. Mood Lighting

From fairy light canopies to classic festoon lights, decorative lighting is the number one must-have for creating a party-ready outdoor space. The right lighting choices can instantly soften any setting and create a warm, inviting atmosphere for your guests. Fairy lights draped around railings and fences, candles dotted around patios, and plant pots and flower beds elevated with stake lights all help to take an outdoor area from afternoon to evening, and from everyday to something special.

2. Make The Most Of Every Space

No area is too tiny for an outdoor gathering! Lawns and large patios are great for bigger events, but even small yards and balconies can play host to al fresco gatherings with a bit of clever planning. A compact bistro set, a simple string of vintage-style café lights and a cluster of LED candles will create a perfect scene for a weekend brunch. A single tree can become something truly magical by adding a few lengths of connectable fairy lights and a hanging lantern or two. You don’t need a sprawling outdoor kitchen to treat your guests to five-star service: an at-home, DIY cocktail bar is a fabulously easy way to create a big party atmosphere in smaller spaces.

3. DIY Décor

For a bespoke party setup, get crafty: it’s amazing what can be achieved with just a few bits and pieces and some cleverly integrated lighting. For larger spaces, a bamboo-cane cabana with a fairy light canopy creates a showstopping scene for outdoor dinner parties. Or, for an intimate evening gathering with a few close friends, opt for a mini canopy – complete with interwoven LED micro lights – above a garden bench. For seriously sparkling celebrations, we love this solar bulb chandelier above a decadently set table.

4. Cosy Corners

Create little pockets for relaxation for your guests using floor cushions, woven rugs, layered blankets, and even draped, decorative fabrics. As the temperature drops in the evenings, consider a blanket box of plush throws to cosy up in: choose designs in mismatched colours or prints for an eclectic gathering, or opt for neutral tones for a classy, luxurious take – perfect for weddings and “grown-up” birthday celebrations under the stars. Add quirky surfaces twinkling with LED candlelight to create simple, inviting conversation zones for guests to settle into post-dinner: upcycled apple crates are a unique, budget-friendly option for this.

5. Open Air Tablescapes

An al fresco tablescape is a playground for creativity. Consider if your gathering has a theme, a colour palette, or a specific “vibe” that can be woven through your tablescape choices. Beachy, coastal tones are a fantastic choice for an afternoon garden party, or explore purples and deep, forest greens for something a little more dramatic as the sun sets. Add LED tealights and battery operated lanterns to bring ambience to dinners and buffets, and string festoon lights overhead to complete the look. Finishing touches – such as seashells or spriggy bunches of herbs in upcycled glassware – set the scene for memorable al fresco moments.

6. Perfect Pathways

The often-forgotten element! Once the deck is dressed and the fairy light canopy is finished, don’t forget about the secret ingredient: pathways. More than just a route for your guests to get from the gate to the buffet, pathways can set the scene for your gathering as soon as your revellers arrive, so don’t forget about them! Illuminate the way using solar stake nights nestled into flowerbeds and borders. Tiki torches will create an instant laidback energy, whilst twinkling mushroom lights tucked amongst the greenery will have your guests feeling that they’re on their way to a truly magical evening. Repurposed glass jars filled with small LED candles are a great, thrifty way to elevate your walkways.
