Winter Peace: Creating a Cosy Celestial Corner for Christmas

Written by: Millie Breakspeare

You don't need to deck every room in your home to feel Christmas arrive. Sometimes one well-loved corner does it best: a chair by the window, a nook at the end of the sofa, a windowsill wide enough for a mug and a book. Dress that one spot with care and it becomes a peaceful pocket of light to relax in once the winter evenings draw in.

If you’d rather lean into the beauty of the season instead of tradition for your winter décor this year, why not go for a snowy celestial look? Think of a clear winter night after fresh snowfall: deep blue sky, scattered stars, a pale moon, and everything below it soft, hushed, and white. It's quieter than the classic red and green, a little dreamy, and it lasts from late November right through to the bleak end of January, without ever feeling out of date.

Wondering where to start? Here are our top tips for creating a soft, peaceful corner that still reflects the winsome appeal of winter.

The Perfect Palette

First, you want to pick a spot you'll actually sit in. A reading chair, a window seat or the end of a sofa all work - ideally with a side table, a shelf or a sill nearby to hold your decorations. A corner near a window is perfect for this winter wonderland theme, because the cold blue light outside naturally does half the work for you.

You can then choose your colours based on a peaceful snowy winter night:

  • Midnight and ink blue for the night sky: in a cushion, a velvet throw or a single painted wall.
  • Frosted white and ivory for snow: in ceramics, candles and knitted textures.
  • Silver and pewter for starlight: in candle holders, baubles and tiny accents.
  • Soft, warm gold in small doses: mostly coming from candles and fairy lights.

If you're unsure, keep the big surfaces white and cream, and let blue arrive in one or two fabrics. The glow of the lights will warm everything up once the sun goes down.

Candles for Starshine

Candlelight is the heart of a cosy corner, and in a celestial scheme it plays the part of the moon and the brightest stars. The trick is to group candles together, rather than dot them around, to form pools of light.

Arrange odd numbers, three or five, at different levels. Chunky white pillars can be set at ground level to create a base; you can also use candles with a frost effect to bring some winter charm indoors, without having to leave your snug sanctuary. Silver ombré cone tapers can add height by styling them on windowsills and tables. You can then fill the gaps with ivory votives and short twist effect candles to bring visual interest with contrasting heights.

Don’t forget to include star-shaped LED candles for a special touch of starlight, to curate a sense of wonder and whimsy in your little corner. You can extend the twinkle to your candle holders: look for brass or pewter candlesticks with a little celestial detail, crescent-moon tealight holders, or star-shaped sconces. Mercury glass is perfect here, because its mottled silver catches the flame and scatters it like frost.

Decorations for a Snowy Scene

Ceramics introduce weight and calm to a space, as well as bring your winter wonderland to life. A matte white finish looks like fresh powder, while the smooth texture looks like the perfect unblemished blanket of fallen snow. Style ceramic huts and houses, of varying designs and sizes, across shelves and tables to catch the eye, and create your own mini-Christmas village. The soft glowing light will also build a hushed atmosphere.

Capture the glacial beauty of the season with a metallic house decoration that hosts a votive candle. Flickering lights will dance across the walls and roof, highlighting the frosted finish that will bring a special sparkle to your own ice palace.

Just because you want to be cosy and comfortable in your mystical nook, it doesn’t mean it can’t also be pleasing on the eye. Add a feeling of luxury to the space with our trio of confetti glass globes. Not only will they bring sparkle, but the swirling white patterned glass makes you feel like you’ve captured your own mini snowstorm in your home.

String Lights for Your Own Starry Sky

If candles are the moon, string lights are the stars. They're what make the corner glow from across the room, and they keep it feeling magical long after the candles go out.

Here are a few options you can mix and match:

Snowy Textures and Finishing Touches

With the light sorted, softness is what turns a pretty corner into a cosy one. Aim for textures that feel like snow underfoot and a clear night overhead.

  • Throws and cushions: go for a chunky cream knit you can snuggle under with a good book, a faux sheepskin over the chair, and a plush blue cushion.
  • Silver sparkle: place a handful of mercury-glass or frosted baubles in a ceramic bowl, scatter tiny star confetti around your candles, or add a single snow-globe on the windowsill.
  • Something to do: make sure you have a stack of winter reads, a notebook and a good pen, or a jigsaw within reach. A cosy corner should invite you to stay.

Stop before it feels too busy. The snowy celestial look depends on a little empty space; the same way a night sky needs darkness between the stars.

You don’t need to put in too much effort to welcome the quiet peace of winter into your home. With a couple of strings of fairy lights, cosy candles, and thoughtful décor, you can layer your lighting to build a hushed ambience – perfect for snuggling up in your favourite chair, under a blanket with a mulled cider in hand.
