4 Ways to Brighten Up Blue Monday
Written by: Emily Rayner
As we start this fresh new year we've been looking at ways to brighten up the winter days and truly look after ourselves this January. Over the past few years there has been an increased awareness of Blue Monday and the focus has shifted to ways people can help improve their mental health. Below are some tips and activities you can implement to help keep you in a positive mindset and make it through Blue Monday.
1. Practice Mindfulness
Some people consider mindfulness strictly relating to activities such as meditation but it can take many other forms. Practicing mindfulness is simply about being in the present moment and being engaged in everyday life. One of our favourite ways to do this is by using fairy lights to create a cosy setting and getting snuggled up with a new book. Cooking our favourite meal from scratch is also a great way to practice mindfulness as you go through all the different steps and appreciate the fresh aromas of the food. This allows you to practice slowing down and enjoying the exact moment that you’re in.
2. Do Some Gentle Exercise
Not all forms of exercising need to leave you out of breath and in a sweat, but getting your body moving can have as much of a positive impact on your mental health as much as your physical health. Getting out in nature and going for a walk is a great way to make you feel refreshed and recharge your battery. If you don’t want to go outside or the weather isn’t permitting, why not try some basic stretches or yoga to release any tension stored in the body and help you unwind and relax.
3. Connect With Those Around You
Connecting to the people around you helps you to feel supported when you’re having a blue day. Reaching out to your loved ones, whether that be in person or over the phone, is a great way to boost your mood and lift your spirits. If you’re in a position where you are able to support other people, donating or helping out at local charities is not only partaking in a good deed but also allows you to feel connected to your local community.
4. Make Time for Yourself
Mondays can often be busy and tiring and, at the start of a hectic week, it’s easy for us to forget to take time to look after and treat ourselves. Setting aside some moments to focus purely on yourself whether it be having a bath with LED candles, putting on a face mask or doing some skincare, gives you a small pick me up to ensure that you're in the best mindset to take on and enjoy the week ahead.
